The San Mateo County Trial Lawyers Association was formed in 1967 as a local chapter of the California Trial Lawyers Association (now Consumer Attorneys of California). The first members were the leading plaintiffs-oriented trial lawyers in San Mateo County.

For the first few years, SMCTLA’s primary function was to provide a vehicle for an exchange of ideas and strategies and for fellowship among trial attorneys who represented plaintiffs in civil actions. As the membership increased, the organization began providing educational seminars and reached out to include attorneys in the areas of family and criminal defense law.

Throughout its existence, SMCTLA has engaged in activities to promote a good relationship between the local judiciary and its members. The most recognized event has been the highly successful annual SMCTLA Judges Night which recognizes and honors members of the local judiciary and law enforcement.

SMCTLA has been recognized throughout the years by the CAOC as one of the outstanding chapters in the State of California.
